En Agosto de 1940 se ordenó al Wa Prüf 6 (Waffenamt Prüfwesen 6 - Panzer und Motorisierungsabteilung), comenzar el desarrollo de un nuevo vehículo con mejores capacidades campo a través. Se aumentaría el espesor del frontal hasta los 30mm, con una armadura lateral suficiente para resistir proyectiles perforantes de 7,92mm. Debía ser capaz de vadear 1,20m, tendría una tripulación de 4 hombres y estaría armado con un cañón de 20mm con capacidad antiaérea y una ametralladora coaxial de 7,92mm.

El chásis fue fabricado por Büssing-NAG en Leipzig, la superestructura por Deutschen Edelstahlwerke en Krefeld, y las torretas por Daimler-Benz AG (50mm) y Schichau-Werke (20mm). La firma checa Tatra proporcionó los motores diésel V-12 de 220hp refrigerados por aire.

En FoW, el Sd.Kfz. 234/2 es uno de los mejores vehículos de reconocimiento de la Wehrmacht. Su magnífica movilidad (40cm a campo a través y 60cm por carretera), y su Frontal 3 le dan unas excelentes posibilidades de supervivencia. Aunque debería ceñirse a su función de reconocimiento, su cañón de 50mm es una amenaza muy seria para otros vehículos de reconocimiento, artillería autopropulsada o cazacarros enemigos. No obstante, debido a su escasa producción sólo estuvo disponible para un puñado de Divisiones Panzer: La Panzer Lehr, la LSSAH y las Pz.Div. 2, 7, 13 y 20.
In FoW, the Sd.Kfz. 234/2 is one of the best recce vehicles available for the Wehrmacht. Its superb mobility (40cm cross-country and 60cm on roads) and Front Armor 3 provide excellent survivability. Although they should avoid engaging the enemy, their 50mm gun is a serious threat to other recce vehicles, self-propelled artillery and tank destroyers. However, due to its limited production, they were only available to a handful of Panzer Divisions: Panzer Lehr, LSSAH and Pz.Div. 2, 7, 13 and 20.
