Mi fuerza del Eje es una variación de la clásica Panzergrenadier de V3 ambientada en las batallas por Narva en Febrero/Marzo de 1944. La lista hace un uso extensivo de la carta '116th Panzer Division Greyhound' para maximizar el número de pelotones blindados y poder atacar con ciertas garantías. La presencia de los Tiger aporta algo de interés: en la campaña de Narva, el 502. s.Pz.Abt. combatió de forma dispersa, con pequeños grupos apoyando a destacamentos de infantería a lo largo de todo el frente, si bien un pelotón completo de 4x Panzer IV o StuG sería más efectivo a la hora de aportar 'músculo'. Por lo demás, los PaK y los Marder garantizan la eliminación de cualquier carro de FA: 7, los Puma aportan la capacidad Recce y pueden empeñarse para eliminar eficazmente vehículos ligeros, y la lista es flexible a la hora de plantear Reservas.

My Axis force is a variation of the classic 3rd Edition Panzergrenadier set in the Battle of Narva in February/March 1944. The list makes extensive use of the '116th Panzer Division Greyhound' card to maximize the number of armored platoons in order to attack with certain guarantees. The Tigers add some flavor: in the Narva campaign, the 502. s.Pz.Abt. fought in small scattered groups, supporting infantry detachments along the entire front. A full platoon of 4x Panzer IVs or StuGs would had arguably been more effective at providing 'muscle' instead. Overall, PaKs and Marders can deal with any FA: 7 tank, Pumas provide the Recce capability and will remove enemy light vehicles as a bonus, and the list itself is flexible enough in scenarios with Reserves.

Chendo ha modificado su compañía mecanizada de la Panzer Lehr para adaptarla a la 4a Edición. Se trata de una fuerza compacta y muy móvil, con bastantes recursos a su alcance para atacar o defender con garantías, aunque el diseño haga pensar más en lo primero. Tal como está planteada echo en falta una unidad Recon para tomar ventaja del despliegue inicial. Los pelotones de Panzergrenadier son duros y tienen todo el AT posible, pero da la impresión (como en todas las listas mecanizadas) de que falta masa de maniobra, y los Sd. Kfz. 251/9 son un apoyo excelente, pero no sustituyen a un segundo pelotón de carros.

Chendo has evolved his classic Panzer Lehr mechanized list into the 4th Edition environment. It is a compact and very mobile force, with enough resources at its disposal to attack or defend with guarantees, although its design favors the former. Indeed I miss some Recce unit to take advantage of the initial deployment. Lehr Panzergrenadier platoons (9 stands strong) are tough and have all the AT they can get, but overall the list seems (as with all mechanized lists) to lack mass of maneuver somewhat, and Sd. Kfz. 251/9 are excellent support unit, but they can't make up for a second tank platoon.

After a long time, a pandemic and tons of life issues, we are finally back to normal (mostly) with a new League to warm up engines and get used to the new (well, not so) Flames of War 4th Edition. Panzerkanone ha elegido una compañía acorazada SS como su única lista. Siendo una fuerza pensada para atacar, la falta de Recon puede pasar factura a tantas unidades Aggressive. A priori no parece más capaz que una compañía similar del Heer (Veteran + Careful), y el añadido de la batería FlaK en principio sólo es útil contra otras listas acorazadas. Los onerosos Tiger de las SS proporcionan un extra de AT que ya está cubierto por los FlaK, y aunque más resistentes que los Panzer IV no son ni mucho menos invulnerables.

Panzerkanone has chosen a SS Panzer Company as his only list. As a force intended to attack, the lack of Recce can take its toll with so many Aggressive units around. At first sight it doesn't seem more capable than its Heer counterpart (Veteran + Careful), and the addition of the static FlaK battery is only useful against other armoured lists. Lavish SS Tigers deliver the same long range high-AT punch already provided by the FlaKs, and while more survivable than the Panzer IVs they are by no means invulnerable.

Supuestamente esta será nuestra última Liga V3, por lo que me parecía apropiado jugar con los últimos Panzers. Compuesta por una miríada de pequeñas unidades veteranas destrozadas e instructores de Panzerschule, la Panzerdivision Clausewitz fue lanzada apresuradamente al combate en el frente occidental contra la cabeza de puente aliada para romper el cerco del Grupo de Ejércitos B de Model. Curiosamente, esta formación puede llevar a cabo batallas nocturnas debido a que algunos Panthers han recibido equipo IR.

Allegedly this is the last V3 League, so it seemed fitting to field the last Panzers. Composed from a myriad of small shattered veteran units cobbled together and Panzerschule instructors, Panzerdivision Clausewitz was hastily thrown to combat in the Western Front against the Allied bridgehead trying to relieve the encircled Model's Army Group B. Interestingly enough, this formation may conduct Night Battles due to some Panthers having received IR equipment.

KG Peiper rides again! No infantry this time, it has been replaced with a string of tiny Trained Platoons and an overabundance of Artillery (up to six templates!). Originally an aggressive force, the only recognizable assault-worthy unit is the Panzer IV Platoon, which is notoriously brittle.

Laro tenía en mente las tácticas de enjambre al elegir su lista alemana. Diecisiete Panzers Veteranos son algo serio, aunque no tienen suficiente punch para derrotar consistentemente a otros carros medios ni armadura para lanzarse directamente contra cañones AT. por otro lado los Hornisse son más adecuados para el frente del este, y su exagerado AT 16 se desperdiciará en muchos casos.

Laro had swarm tactics in mind when choosing his German list. Seventeen Veteran Panzers are surely a thing, but they lack the punch to consistently defeat Allied medium tanks and frontal armour to successfully exchange blows with AT guns. The Hornisses are more suitable for the Eastern front, though, and their AT16 is just overkill.

Chendo has reverted to the ol' good Panzergrenadier Lehr, swapping the Pumas for armoured mortars. I surely would have stuck with the Recce, but still a pretty solid list.

Sobre el papel esta compañía, con 8 pelotones de armas combinadas, es un rival formidable, pero si la revisamos cuidadosamente veremos que ese número se ha alcanzado a base de adelgazar pelotones clave. Las unidades de 3 StuG no soportan bien las bajas, y la infantería a pie difícilmente va a poder seguir el ritmo de los carros.

In theory, this Company, with 8 combined weapons platoons, is a formidable opponent, but if we look it twice we will realize that that number was reached by thinning key units. 3-StuG Platoons absorb casualties poorly, and the infantry on foot will hardly be able to follow tanks' pace.

Connor ha regresado con su clásica Tigerkompanie. Sin jugadores soviéticos (ni sus Cat Killers) a la vista, sus 6 Tigers pueden sembrar la destrucción en las formaciones aliadas si se emplean cuidadosamente. Las cortinas de humo y el apoyo de la infantería serán claves para que los grandes gatos lleguen a sus objetivos.

Connor is coming back with his classic Tigerkompanie. With no Soviet players (and their Cat Killers) at sight its 6 Tigers may lay waste on the Allied formations if used carefully. Smokescreens and infantry support will be invaluable for the Big Cats to reach the Objectives.

FoW V4 Mid War Playtest - Aftermath

Tras un largo tiempo sin publicar he decidido retomar mi actividad en el blog compartiendo algunos pensamientos sobre nuestra toma de contacto con la V4. La partida en sí fue poco concluyente (ni siquiera pudimos finalizarla), pero suficiente como para llevarnos algunas impresiones.

After a long time of break I am resuming my blogging activity by sharing some thoughts about our first contact with V4. The fight itself was mostly unconclusive (we did not finish either), but enough to make an impression. 

En primer lugar la sensación es muy similar a la V3, con muchos ajustes y cambios menores. Por otro lado las Órdenes de Movimiento son un revulsivo y aún estamos asimilándolas todas para no tener que recurrir al libro. Los nuevos sistemas de Mando y Moral van a requerir muchas más pruebas para poder valorarlos adecuadamente.

First of all, general feeling is pretty similar to V3 with lots of tweaks and minor changes. On the other hand, Movement Orders are a game changer and we are still struggling to assimilate them without going to the rulebook. New Command and Morale systems require more tests to properly review.

Una cosa es cierta: es necesario tener físicamente las tarjetas de las unidades. No las teníamos en ese momento, lo que nos obligó a consultar el libro de reglas constantemente, ralentizando el juego en exceso.

One thing is certain: it is mandatory to have the unit cards physically. We did not got them at the time and had to go to the rulebook once and again, which posed a major hindrance and turned the game into a slog.

No es fácil encontrar un escenario en que esta fuerza pueda partir con ventaja. Aunque posee 9 Pelotones F/V, son diminutos y su impacto en la mesa es limitado. Incluso con los añadidos, simplemente carece de gente para lanzar un ataque frontal. Los únicos blindados potentes son 6 frágiles Stummel, que son excelentes como apoyo cercano apoyando asaltos de infantería pero espantosos a la hora de usarlos como carros ligeros, ya que no son capaces de resistir ninguna oposición con un mínimo equipamiento AT. Dos PaK 40 son claramente insuficientes para sostener el frente por su cuenta o causar daño en Emboscada, y la segunda patrulla de 8-rad aporta muy poco al conjunto. En suma, depende en gran medida de la actuación del apoyo aéreo y la artillería pesada, que son tan poderosos como poco fiables.

It is not easy to find a scenario in which this particular force could have the upper hand. Althought it has 9 F/V Platoons, they are severely undermanned. Even with the attachments it simply lacks manpower to launch a frontal attack. The only armor available are six flimsy Stummels, which are  good close fire support assets when backing a proper infantry assault, but terrible if you use then as light tanks, as they are unable to overcome any AT opposition. Two PaK 40 are not enough to hold the front on their own or Ambush properly, and the second 8-rad Patrol is almost useless. It relies heavily on air support and heavy artillery, but they are as powerful as unreliable.

Laro ha elegido una Panzerkompanie compuesta enteramente de carros. Esta es una decisión arriesgada, si bien la mezcla de modelos proporciona una herramienta para cada situación: humo directo, asaltos, capacidad AT de larga distancia, y apoyo de fuego cercano. La falta de Recon es dolorosa y los número escasos, confiando en la resiliencia de la HG para mantenerse en acción.

Laro has chosen a Panzerkompanie composed entirely of tanks. This is a bold move, although the wide array of models provide a tool for almost every task: direct smoke, Assaulting, long range AT and close fire support. The lack of Recce is biting, though, and the numbers are scarce, relying on the resilience bestowed by the 'Elite Troops' HG ability.

Panzerkanone ha escogido como lista del Eje una Compañía Grenadier alemana con un nutrido grupo acorazado. El núcleo base es Trained y puramente defensivo, aunque bien equipado para resistir asaltos de carros. Como complemento pesado dispone de una poderosa formación de la División Hermann Goering en la que destacan dos pelotones de carros que le confieren una importante pegada en ataque.

As his Axis list Panzerkanone will field a Trained Grenadier Company from the Italian Front. Its Combat core is purely defensive, but well equipped fo fend off enemy Armour. The Company is Support-heavy, relying in a powerful formation from the Hermann Goering Division as the main strike force, with two Armoured Platoons and a couple of 88s to protect their flanks.
