Como mi primera lista Aliada en la V4 he adaptado mi antigua Task Force A a una nueva fuerza multiformación inspirada en los combates de la 4a División Acorazada en Lunèville, en septiembre de 1944. Se trata de una lista muy móvil, pensada para atacar, sobrepasar y flanquear al oponente con mucha masa de maniobra. 

Como puede verse, está optimizada para incluir compañías completas, en absoluto para jugar con Reservas y, si bien el volumen de fuerzas permite asumir riesgos (y bajas), la mayoría de las unidades son Trained, lo que hace que sean poco fiables en asaltos. La falta de AT medio es un riesgo que se compensa con una mayor cantidad de medios ligeros, pero se me hace raro prescindir de los Sherman. Podría ser interesante hacer sitio a un segundo pelotón Recce si se pueden exprimir más los puntos. 

As my first US 4th Edition list, I have adapted my former Task Force A into a new multi Formation list inspired in the 4th AD offensive in the Lunèville area, September 1944. It is a very mobile attacking force, designed to aggressively overrun and outflank enemy positions.

I tend to include full strength companies as a personal choice, despite the fact that the list struggles to deal with Reserves and, although the sheer numbers allow taking risks (and casualties), most of the units are Trained, which makes them unreliable in assaults. The lack of medium AT is balanced somewhat by maximizing the Stuart company, but it feels weird to go without Shermans. It could be interesting to squeeze in a second Recce platoon to improve your starting positions.

Supuestamente esta será nuestra última Liga V3, por lo que me parecía apropiado jugar con los últimos Panzers. Compuesta por una miríada de pequeñas unidades veteranas destrozadas e instructores de Panzerschule, la Panzerdivision Clausewitz fue lanzada apresuradamente al combate en el frente occidental contra la cabeza de puente aliada para romper el cerco del Grupo de Ejércitos B de Model. Curiosamente, esta formación puede llevar a cabo batallas nocturnas debido a que algunos Panthers han recibido equipo IR.

Allegedly this is the last V3 League, so it seemed fitting to field the last Panzers. Composed from a myriad of small shattered veteran units cobbled together and Panzerschule instructors, Panzerdivision Clausewitz was hastily thrown to combat in the Western Front against the Allied bridgehead trying to relieve the encircled Model's Army Group B. Interestingly enough, this formation may conduct Night Battles due to some Panthers having received IR equipment.

Laro tenía en mente las tácticas de enjambre al elegir su lista alemana. Diecisiete Panzers Veteranos son algo serio, aunque no tienen suficiente punch para derrotar consistentemente a otros carros medios ni armadura para lanzarse directamente contra cañones AT. por otro lado los Hornisse son más adecuados para el frente del este, y su exagerado AT 16 se desperdiciará en muchos casos.

Laro had swarm tactics in mind when choosing his German list. Seventeen Veteran Panzers are surely a thing, but they lack the punch to consistently defeat Allied medium tanks and frontal armour to successfully exchange blows with AT guns. The Hornisses are more suitable for the Eastern front, though, and their AT16 is just overkill.

FoW V4 Mid War Playtest - Aftermath

Tras un largo tiempo sin publicar he decidido retomar mi actividad en el blog compartiendo algunos pensamientos sobre nuestra toma de contacto con la V4. La partida en sí fue poco concluyente (ni siquiera pudimos finalizarla), pero suficiente como para llevarnos algunas impresiones.

After a long time of break I am resuming my blogging activity by sharing some thoughts about our first contact with V4. The fight itself was mostly unconclusive (we did not finish either), but enough to make an impression. 

En primer lugar la sensación es muy similar a la V3, con muchos ajustes y cambios menores. Por otro lado las Órdenes de Movimiento son un revulsivo y aún estamos asimilándolas todas para no tener que recurrir al libro. Los nuevos sistemas de Mando y Moral van a requerir muchas más pruebas para poder valorarlos adecuadamente.

First of all, general feeling is pretty similar to V3 with lots of tweaks and minor changes. On the other hand, Movement Orders are a game changer and we are still struggling to assimilate them without going to the rulebook. New Command and Morale systems require more tests to properly review.

Una cosa es cierta: es necesario tener físicamente las tarjetas de las unidades. No las teníamos en ese momento, lo que nos obligó a consultar el libro de reglas constantemente, ralentizando el juego en exceso.

One thing is certain: it is mandatory to have the unit cards physically. We did not got them at the time and had to go to the rulebook once and again, which posed a major hindrance and turned the game into a slog.

FoW V4 Mid War Playtest!

Laro ha elegido una Panzerkompanie compuesta enteramente de carros. Esta es una decisión arriesgada, si bien la mezcla de modelos proporciona una herramienta para cada situación: humo directo, asaltos, capacidad AT de larga distancia, y apoyo de fuego cercano. La falta de Recon es dolorosa y los número escasos, confiando en la resiliencia de la HG para mantenerse en acción.

Laro has chosen a Panzerkompanie composed entirely of tanks. This is a bold move, although the wide array of models provide a tool for almost every task: direct smoke, Assaulting, long range AT and close fire support. The lack of Recce is biting, though, and the numbers are scarce, relying on the resilience bestowed by the 'Elite Troops' HG ability.

Para esta vuelta he dejado de lado los planteamientos defensivos para recuperar el espíritu de las Panzerdivisionen. Los aguerridos veteranos de una de las unidades más emblemáticas del Heer volverán a la carga una vez más.

For this row I scrapped any defensive approaches to recover the spirit of the Panzerdivisionen. The battle-hardened veterans of one of the most emblematic units in the Heer will lead the cavalry once more.

Laro ha hecho un ejercicio de Min-Maxing para su Kampfgruppe Berlin y ha optado por cuatro pelotones Conscript como fuerza de infantería. La Compañía resultante es puramente defensiva, ya que si bien dispone de dos potente pelotones de carros veteranos apenas puede añadir algo más para acompañarlos en un ataque. Cuenta con doce bocas de fuego que se lo van a poner muy difícil a cualquier blindado que quiera hincarle el diente a la infantería, pero al no contar con capacidad de attachments o formar un Kampfgruppe sus posibilidades tácticas son limitadas.

Laro has taken a Min-Max approach for his Kampfgruppe Berlin, choosing 4 Conscripts Platoon as his Infantry force. The resulting Company is purely defensive, with two powerful Veteran Panzer Platoons with little backup when attacking. Its twelve guns will rain a shitstorm over any armor trying to cut through the infantry, but with no possibility of Attachments or Kampfgruppe its tactical possibilities are limited.

No hay muchas listas en las que uno pueda combinar Tigers, Königstigers y Panthers al mismo tiempo y en número suficiente. El Ausbildungs Abteilung 500 es una de ellas. El precio: reglas reducidas, y falta de humo indirecto, Recon y antiaéreos autopropulsados. La Compañía tiene pegada, pero es lenta en ataque y vulnerable a larga distancia a cañones AT pesados. Defensivamente tiene más posibilidades, con los carros pesados bajo el paraguas antiaéreo de los FlaK.

There are not many lists that allow you to field Tigers, Panthers and Königstigers at a time and in numbers. The Ausbildungs Abteilung 500 is one of them. But this comes with a price: worn out tanks, reduced abilities and a total lack of indirect smoke, Recce and self-propelled AA assets. The Company has a fair amount of heavy hitters, but it is slow on the attack and significantly vulnerable to heavy AT guns. It is capable to build a solid defense line, though, with the big cats operating under the protective FlaK umbrella.

Para mi primera lista SS, he escogido a los voluntarios supervivientes del 'Freikorps Danmark', integrado dentro de la 11 SS-Panzergrenadierdivision 'Nordland' junto a los restos de la 'Legion Norwegen'. La Compañía es sencilla y sin mucha originalidad: tres pelotones PzG equipados con armamento AT adicional respaldados por las tradicionales y necesarias unidades de apoyo del batallón, los siempre útiles Nebelwerfer y un par de 8-rads para aportar Recon y un poco de movilidad. Los carísimos Königstiger Veteranos, del 501. s.Pz.Abt de élite, están únicamente por su factor de "moloneidad", ya que van a tener que dar lo mejor de sí mismos para intentar compensar los puntos que cuestan. En resumen, una Compañía defensiva estática, equilibrada y con malas perspectivas para afrontar la mayoría de misiones móviles.

For my first SS list, I have chosen to field the battle-hardened survivors from 'Freikorps Danmark', now integrated into 11 SS-Panzergrenadierdivision 'Nordland' alongside the remnants from 'Legion Norwegen'. The Company is plain and straightforward: three PzG Platoons fitted with extra AT weapons, backed by the mandatory Battalion support units, the ubiquitous Nebelwerfers and a couple of 8-rads to add some Recce and mobility. The lavish Veteran Königstigers from the elite 501. s.Pz.Abt are included just for badassery, as they will have to outperform themselves to match their staggering cost. Overall, a pretty static, well balanced defensive Company, ill-suited to face most mobile missions

La nueva iteración de la Ersatz Pionierkompanie de Rgarcim promete ser mucho más robusta que su antecesora. Con 2 pelotones más que pueden ser 3 si decide hacer un KG con las ametralladoras, la lista tiene mucha presencia en mesa, y cuenta nada menos que con 4 pelotones móviles. Entre los "peros", cabría destacar su fragilidad en ataque, algo que no nos sorprende dada la naturaleza defensiva de la misma, y el pequeño tamaño de algunas unidades, que puede ser un problema en caso de un combate prolongado.

Rgarcim's new iteration of his Pionierkompanie is meant to be more sturdy than its old version. It sports 2 more Platoons, adding a third one using the Kampfgruppe ability (with the HMGs from the HQ, most likely), thus expanding its grasp over the battlefield. The list have 4 mobile Platoons, but its performance on the attack is uncertain, due to its defensive nature and the small size of some units, which is going to be a hindrance in prolonged battles.

Sin sorpresas por aquí. Habiendo jugado únicamente 3 partidas (2 victorias, 1 empate) con los Jagdtiger en la pasada Liga, me apetecía ver un poco más de acción con ellos. Así pues, los diezmados restos del schwere Panzergruppe Hudel vuelven a la carga de nuevo.

No surprises here. I only played 3 games (2 wins, 1 draw) with the Jagdtigers during the past League and I wanted some more action. So, the war-torn remnants of the schwere Panzergruppe Hudel are on the road again!

Definitivamente una opción atípica, la Ersatz Pionierkompanie de Rgarcim gravita alrededor de dos debilitados Pelotones de ingenieros desprovistos de cualquier apoyo estático. Si bien pueden tender campos de minas o alambradas y poseen Tank Assault 5, parecen demasiado frágiles para soportar un asalto decidido de infantería. Claramente, en este caso, la parte del león ha ido a parar a los dos Elefant, de dudosa eficacia. Además, la estructura de 5 Pelotones obligará a Rgarcim a crear un KG en Misiones Defensivas a partir de los Combat Platoons, reduciéndolos aún más. Por otro lado, en ataque, sus dos robustas unidades acorazadas son un valor a tener en cuenta.

Definitely an atypical choice, Rgarcim's Ersatz Pionierkompanie gravitates around two understrength Pionier Platoons deprived of any static support. Althought they can lay miefields or barbed wire and have an amazing Tank Assault 5, they look too weak to withstand a tenacious infantry assault. Clearly in this case, the lion's part went to the pair of Elefants, of dubious performance. Moreover, its 5-Platoon structure will force Rgarcim to create a KG from the Combat Platoons, shrinking them even further. However, on the attack its two robust armored units are an added value.
