The approach to St-Lô: June 1944

Con la I Liga Walküre a punto de terminar, es hora de planificar nuestra siguiente Campaña. Dejaremos atrás el crudo invierno de las llanuras ucranianas y nos trasladaremos a Normandía, en el día D+3 para escenificar el avance americano hacia la estratégica localidad de St-Lô. La operación se estructurará en dos campañas 'Axis of Attack' simultáneas:

• La primera: 'A través del Valle del Aure', tendrá como objetivo asegurar el pueblo de Couvains, a 5 millas al noreste de St-Lô de cara a la próxima ofensiva sobre la ciudad.

• La segunda: 'El avance hacia el bosque de Cerisy', buscará desalojar a las unidades alemanas del estratégico terreno elevado del bosque de Cerisy y asegurar así la cabeza de playa aliada frente a posibles contraataques.

Los jugadores, 3 americanos y 3 alemanes, disputarán un máximo de 6 partidas (2 cada uno) en cada uno de los escenarios para decidir el resultado final.

With our I Walküre League almost over, and the winner yet to be decided, it is time to unfold our next Campaign. We will leave behind the harsh Ukrainian winter and move to the rainy Normandy on D-Day+3 to join the American advance towards the strategic town of St-Lô. The approach will be covered in two simultaneous 'Axis of Attack' Campaigns:

• The first one: 'Across the Aure Valley', will aim to seize the village of Couvains, 5 miles northeast of St-Lô for the forthcoming offensive on the city.

• The second one: 'The advance to Cerisy Forest', will see the G.I.s trying to oust the German units from the strategic high ground at Cerisy Forest in order to secure the Allied bridgehead.

The players, three Americans and three Germans will play up to 6 games (2 each) per scenario to decide the outcome.

Los hechos históricos

El 9 de Junio, los soldados de las Divisiones de Infantería 29 y 2 del US Army comenzaron el avance hacia el sur, a través de los terrenos inundados del Valle del Aure, que les conducirían de cabeza hasta el inicio del país del bocage normando. Desprovistos de transporte, las extenuantes marchas les pasaron factura, al tiempo que tenían que hacer frente a una resistencia desorganizada y dispersa, pero tenaz, de los alemanes en retirada. Todo ello con escaso apoyo de carros para hacer frente a los núcleos de resistencia, si bien la artillería aliada (incluida la naval) jugó un papel importante, así como el apoyo aéreo. A pesar de todo, los importantes cruces de caminos de La Haute Littee fueron asegurados el 11 de Junio, y los hombres de la 29 de Infantería hicieron lo propio con St Clair y Couvains al día siguiente. St-Lô está sólo un paso más allá.

The historical outcome

On June 9, the soldiers of the 2nd and 29th U.S. Infantry Divisions began crawling southwards through the flooded lowlands of Aure Valley that would lead them into the Norman bocage country. With no transports available, the strenuous marches through deep mud and shallow waters took a heavy toll on them, while dealing with a stubborn, but disorganized and scattered resistance from the retreating Germans. Backed by little armoured support, they had to reckon on the powerful Allied artillery (including the NGFS) to deal with the resistance pockets that hampered their advance, with air strikes playing an important role. Nevertheless, the vital crossroads of La Haute Littee were seized on June 11, and the men of the 29th did the same with St Clair and Couvains the next day. St-Lô lies just a step further.
